Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Year 12 Mathematics Class Analytics

Ms Panicker is trialing an initiative using the Class Analytics website (https://classanalytics.com.au/) for the Year 12 Mathematics Extension 1 and Extension 2 students in 2019-20. This is a new system in which students practice HSC examination-style questions on a weekly basis. Their responses are scanned and mailed to the Class Analytics team in Sydney, where their sheets are marked and sent back. They will also be provided with an analysis report to show their overall performance (see the sample below). Over time this will allow students to see specific areas on which they need to focus their studies. We hope that students will start to see benefits from using the system and that we will be able to extend the trial to the Advanced and Standard Mathematics students.

Year 11 Examinations

Year 11 Examinations

The Year 11 Examinations begin at the start of Week 9. Students do not have to remain at school once their examinations are completed. Students who have to remain at school can work in the senior study area or the library if available. There are rules for the examination on the exam timetable. Students have been issued with a hard copy already. Any one who was away for this can see Mrs McDonald for a hard copy.

Please contact Mrs Carson or Mrs McDonald if any issues or concerns arise.

A copy of the timetable is provided here.

N Determinations for Year 11

Year 11 students are reminded that all overdue assessments must be submitted by the end of Week 9, to avoid N Determinations being sent home in Week 10. This will affect students' progress into the HSC Year in term 4, so getting tasks in is vital. Parents and carers are being contacted in the next two weeks, to let them know if there are concerns about their students' progress.

Please contact Mrs Carson the Year Adviser or Mrs McDonald the Deputy if you have any questions.

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Dear Parent/Carers of Year 7 & 9 Students,

In May 2019 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools.

This year Shoalhaven High School students in years 7 and 9 will be participating in NAPLAN Online on Tuesday the 14th May to Friday 24th May. The results of the test will provide important information to schools about what each student can do and will be used to support teaching and learning programs.

Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained.

As the tests are online, students will be required to bring headphones if they have them. Please do not go out and buy headphones specifically for NAPLAN Online, as Shoalhaven High School have some available for students to use.

All students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided. Large print, braille, coloured paper versions and electronic tests are available to meet the needs of individual students.

Access to disability adjustments or exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school principal and a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Please make an appointment with the principal if you would like to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN.

Additional information about NAPLAN can be found at:

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Specsavers visit

On Monday 4th and Friday 8th June 2018, Specsavers Nowra came to Shoalhaven High School and offered a free vision screening for Year 10 and Year 11 students.

Over 80% of what children learn is processed through their eyes. Untreated eye conditions may affect learning and self-esteem. It is estimated 1 in 4 children in Australia have undetected vision problems. The vision screening followed a protocol developed by the Optometry Association of Australia and was run by optometrists from Specsavers Nowra Central and Specsavers Nowra Stockland. Please note that the vision screening was NOT a full eye examination.

The vision screening consists of:

(i) Vision clarity check

(ii) Eye muscle coordination/movement test

(iiI) Colour vision test

The outcome was:

Thank you very much to Janette, Mirian and Jarome from Specsavers.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) is an annual collection (since 2015) that counts the number of school students with disability and the level of reasonable educational adjustment they are provided.

All schools must now collect and submit information annually. Personal details such as student names or other identifying information will not be provided to local or federal education authorities.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) representatives will be in SHS Library on Thurs 14 June from 3 - 5pm to assist families in registering for the NDIS and with any questions families may have about their current plan. Families of students with disabilities need to be aware that if students are successful in gaining funding for post-school programs, this funding will come through the NDIS plan for each student. We would like to make the transition from school to post-school options as straight forward as possible. The registration process can take some time so we would encourage parents of students from Yr 10/11/12 to attend. Please come and join us on this afternoon and have your questions answered.

Congratulations to both our nominees and winners of the International Youth Day Awards for the Shoalhaven! It was excellent to not only have so many of our own students nominated but to have them take out 4 of the 5 categories! Congratulations to all, including our Year 10 students who did an excellent job to MC the event, as well as assist in organising the evening.

All students both involved and nominated did a great job and it was touching to hear just some of the reasons why the nominated students had been selected. This celebration really demonstrated the quality and potential in our region's youth which is definitely something to look forward to.

A big thank you to Shoalhaven City Council, the Youth Advisory Committee, all sponsors of the event and Bomaderry Bowling Club for hosting a sensational night! 🏆

Our Visual Arts Gifted and Talented students enjoyed a fabulous day at the Sculptures by the Sea exhibition. Students were lucky enough to enjoy an artist workshop with Linda Bowden where students made their own sculptures and learnt about her artist practice. As they walked the path our students saw a wide variety of amazing sculptures. It was Jordan's Birthday and she bought cupcakes to share and celebrate.

See the photos of the excursion in the gallery.

Our 2017 Year 7 Aspire class will be showcasing their projects on Thursday 29th June from 6:00 – 7:30pm in the school's main hall.

There will be a variety of presentations and demonstrations by the students, as well as some time to talk to both students and their teachers. All are welcome to come and see the amazing work the students have been doing.

The Aspire program is a new extension class that we are piloting in 2017. While we have run some very successful extension classes previously, we have changed several aspects of how the class is set up and run and we now have the 2017 Aspire program.

The underlying principle of the Aspire program is that some students experience a sense of wellbeing and engagement when provided with supportive and challenging learning environments and opportunities that are responsive to their individual strengths and interests and will encourage, challenge and inspire these students to realise their potential.

Youth suicide issues

Dear Parents and Carers,

You may have seen information on the news and in social media about television shows which focus on issues around youth suicide.

It has come to the school's attention that some of our students have watched one series in particular without parental supervision, and have been disturbed by its contents. Given the nature of the issues raised in the series, it is important that parents/carers and the school work together to support students to talk about these issues. If you are concerned about the content of any shows your children may be watching, please talk to them about your concerns, or not allow them to watch these shows. The well being of students is a key priority for all of us.

It is critical that conversations we have both at home and at school are supported by appropriate information. We have attached some resources from Headspace, the adolescent mental heath service, to support parents in having conversations about the series with their child. Our staff also have access to these resources.

Our whole staff are strongly committed to supporting the students in our care, and we also have a variety of wellbeing support structures, including the school counselling service, Year Advisors, Head Teacher Wellbeing, the Student Support Officer, Lisa Horgan, and the Aboriginal Education Officers. We also have strong links to support agencies in our area. Students can access support readily at our school.

A reminder that if a young person is distressed and in need of support, they can call or visit:

- Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800) or kidshelpline.com.au
- eHeadspace (1800 650 890) or eheadspace.org.au
- Lifeline (13 11 14) or lifeline.org.au

Yours sincerely,

Kem Rakiposki
Principal

Remembrance Day 2016

Our SRC seniors are pictured lowering our flags to half mast at 11am on 11th November, to commemorate Remembrance Day 2016. This has taken place during the deeply significant centenary commemorations for World War I. Shoalhaven High School honours our glorious war dead and those who have served nobly in all theatres of war, in defence of our nation.

Mrs J McDonald DP.

Why is this day special to Australians?

At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war. This first modern world conflict had brought about the mobilisation of over 70 million people and left between 9 and 13 million dead, perhaps as many as one-third of them with no known grave. The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead.

Success for SHS in SSPAN Writing Competition

In 2016, SSPAN (Shoalhaven Suicide Prevention and Awareness Network) held its inaugural Young Writers' Award focused on the topic "Learn and Grow". The organisation identified two aims for the competition: "One is our hope to inspire creative writing that focuses on positive resilience and well-being messages to share with the community. The ‘Learn and Grow' message is also about reducing the stigma that often surrounds mental health and encouraging help seeking behaviours. The other aim is to recognise and foster the talent of our own young writers."

A number of Shoalhaven High School's talented writers participated in the competition and we were delighted to find four of our students were named finalists in the senior sections for both prose and poetry. The presentation afternoon hosted by Shoalhaven City Library was held to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month in October.

We are proud to announce that Elisha Wright Smith and Renae Weymans received first prize in the categories of prose and poetry respectively, while Alyson Green was awarded second prize in the poetry category and Joanne Tye rounded out the awards placing equal third in the poetry category.

Congratulations to the girls on their success and thank you to all those students who participated in the competition. We look forward to next year's Award.

TEAL is an acronym for the writing strategy being implemented across the school. It represents the components Topic, Elaborate, Analyse and Link which form a paragraph as part of a short answer and also form a paragraph as part of an extended essay response. Years 7, 8 , 10, 11 and 12 have been introduced to the strategy and Year 9 will be phased in shortly. More can be found under Curriculum and Activities – Literacy Strategies - TEAL . Assignments are currently being adjusted by various faculties to support students in their writing.

The Shoalhaven High School Memorial Garden

Our Memorial Garden was established a number of years ago, as a place of loving remembrance for those staff and students from our school who have passed away.

It is situated near the canteen area, just below the Support staffroom window.

Over time plaques have been placed on the brick wall in the garden, to commemorate the lives of those who have left us. At our recent school assembly, Ms Lindsay, the Relieving Principal, spoke to all those students present about the significance of the garden and the importance of respecting it. Students were reminded that all the plants and bulbs planted there are memorial flora, and must not be mistreated or damaged. This includes not climbing or running onto the garden, or leaving rubbish in the garden. It has been interesting to note the number of students coming to see the garden since then, and asking staff questions about the garden. Ms Bailey, the Relieving English Head Teacher, took one of her junior classes there, to visit the garden. This was an excellent initiative and I would encourage other staff and students to consider engaging in this experience as well, as it helps build an understanding and respect for the garden's purpose.

Recently we planted two beautiful roses, in loving memory of two of our former students who have passed away - Larissa Wellington and Harry Scouller. We hope that that the lovely roses, 'Memoire' and 'Winter Sun' ( chosen for Larissa by her sister, Taylor) will be a fitting memorial to these two special people, as they begin to produce their beautiful flowers.

The school has decided that you are able to keep your Lenovo X131e Netbook and to have all the filtering and security policies removed.

Below is a list of actions required to be completed by you for the successful Graduation of the Netbook:

1. Backup all important work and user files
2. Fill out the attached Transfer of Ownership form (if under 18 you must have a parent carer signature also)
3. Ensure you will not need the Netbook for 48 hours
4. Hand the Netbook and Transfer of Ownership into the IT office

(The TSO will perform your account registration to minimise confusion through the process, you may also retrieve a copy of your software and the registration keys from the TSO, you will need a thumb drive with a minimum of 8 GB of space.)

Should you have any questions regarding the process, please do not hesitate to ask the schools TSO in the IT office in ‘C' Block.

This process needs to be completed before the end of Term 3 2016.
